Why? (See Jane Wonder)
I own a panama straw hat and have a difficult time bringing myself to wear it in public (I wore it here in Mexico and thought it looked funny, but hey, it was vacation). I envy everyone on the street in their straw and lightweight hats during the summer. How do they wear them so naturally? Perhaps I’m a victim of my own self-consciousness or perhaps I really can’t pull off these hats.
For example, I was going to wear this hat to Pitchfork but took a quick look at the camera and opted against it (as seen here).

…but i like it from this angle. |
Anyone else have a complex about wearing certain things?
Maybe I’ll throw my inhibitions aside this weekend and wear my hat proudly!
You look so nice qith this hat… Wear it, you can do it.
It looks lovely, and very natural. I find it hard to wear summer hats because of my short hair… I think they look so much nicer with long flowing locks – like you have 😉

I think you look great in this hat!
I'm not a big hat person never wore one in public 😉

Thats top is lovely! I think you look fine in the hat, I do know what you mean though I just dont suit certain things…..like hats funnily enough haha xx
Hehe, I am glad it is not just me. I have a few hats and living in the sun I should wear them, but they never leave the house. You can actually wear a hat, it does look good. Maybe you need to wear it more at home to get used to it. I would tell you if you looked silly, and you so do not. Keep cool honey. ax
I think it looks really cute on you.
I'm weary of donning hats as well, but I think you look super cute with the panama hat!

Too funnY! That's how I feel about my wide American Apparel hat, but I don't have a problem with my panama hat! You should throw your inhibitions aside, because it looks great (and totally natural) on you!
If anyone can rock a hat- it's you! They look great on you! But I agree I stick to wearing them beachside or poolside! Have a great weekend!
It looks good, but sometimes if you're not feeling it, you'll never want to wear it. I have a red shirtdress in my closet that I get tons of compliments on, but I can't bring myself to wear because it's really short.
Maybe you should get a big floppy suede or felt one for the fall. I bet that would look cute on you!
Kelly
I LOVE it on you! But I am the same way with hats so I know exactly what you mean, haha…so annoying! I want to wear them but I feel stupid

You look just like everyone you see wearing those hats, go for it. Love the shirt and bandeau, where are they from?
You wear it well!
I am the same way with hats. I always love the people who pull them off. Recently I worked up the courage to wear one out of the house, even thought I looked cute in it infront of the mirror, then I saw a photo of myself and started making the same face you are up there… oh well…
Yes, I totally have a complex with straw hats, too. I feel like whenever I wear one, people look at me weird. I just don't think hats, other than the baseball kind, are a Midwest thing. It's a bummer.
First off you shouldn't have a complex you look great. My complex is definitely short shorts hate my legs and I'm too old for that shiz now any way hahah.

Ha I'm exactly the same, i buy a hat on holiday every year, wear it every single day that I'm on holiday, then when I get back home it stays on top of the wardrobe because I think I look silly in it! How ridiculous eh?
awjotter
I'm totally the same way about hats 🙁 But for what it's worth, it looks great on you, promise!
I agree with the others in that you look great! But, I completely understand your worry. I am that same way with hats, scarves worn super-cutely (on others, that is) in their hair, and huge sunnies. All we can do is give it a try. 🙂
That hat looks so good on you! And I totally feel weird about hats sometimes too, but if I have a bad hair day, a hat can easily be stuck on my head all day, especially at work where no one cares how you dress.
So fun seeing you again yesterday! <3!
I am SO with you on this: I love hats, buy them up constantly, and then get self-conscious about wearing them in public (because hardly anyone in the midwest wears fedoras and such on a non-vacation basis).
Love the panama hat; I have a very similar version- is it Urban?

i love the hat! it looks great on you. i always worry about chicago winds blowing a hat away… xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
You look so cute with the hat though!! I totally feel the same way when I wear hats (I think we own the same one) but I think it's our own self consciousness. I think you should go for it! 🙂
I am always really freaked to wear hats as well – I just think I look strange. But I think you are totally pulling this off…maybe I should reevaluate my own hat self-consciousness.

Totally! I wore a vintage turban and felt so self conscience. It didn't look bad, just felt weird.
You look great lady! AND p.s. love that you can wear see through lace… i'm too scared 🙂
I'm exactly the same with my little straw fedora. I look wearing it for photos to add that extra little punch of style, but can not build up the courage to wear it in real life! LOL. You should do it, it looks great!

Super lovely blog!

Girlfriend, I feel the same way about hats! But this one looks seriously fabulous on you – do wear it!
xx Marissa
I know what you mean! I wear winter hats all the time, but have the hardest time making use of my summer hats. I think its mostly cause its so hot here. I just want to wear as little as possible!
I'm the same way with hats. I just can't do it. I feel weird and I start the old pull, adjust, tug game. It's not a pretty sight.
it's a cute hat! and you look great! no worries! =)
OMG I thought I was the only person that felt that way about hats. I have three hats and I just cant seem to be able to wear them in public. I buy them and then they seem to just sit in my closet. I will try again this weekend ; )

I know exactly how you feel! I own two hats like this (one with a huge rim) and I've only worn them on vacation in Palm Springs because, well, it was vacation (and no one would recognize me there.)
However, I think the hat trend is pretty adorable and you can most certainly pull it off! So after seeing how good the trend looks on you, I'm making it my goal to wear one of my hats this weekend (out in public… Around the house doesn't count!).
Sarah
i totally can relate. i wish i could pull off a hat like that but i just think i look so silly!
i think the hat looks cute on you though!

That's a lovely hat! But I'm the same way about them and I also used to have a thing about colorful sunglasses.. it just takes time and confidence, you'll pull it off wonderfully!
It looks great in both photos! Don't worry about it, just throw it on 🙂
i know exactly how you feel, i feel the same way. i own several floppy hats but they're collecting dust in my closet :/
i say wear it!!
-B
Throw on a pair of sunglasses…that always helps me with the summer hats. (But I think you look adorable, anyway!)
I have a slight problem wearing pink/reds (since I'm a redhead)…but seeing other fellow reds trying it has given me a little boost.
I have recently been living the same exact situation. I have a great panama hat – and it's been sitting in my closet since March! I bring it with me to the beach every so often, but never wear it there except briefly. But last week, I decided to test it out on a little shopping trip to local boutiques and I got 4 compliments within an hour!!! Yay! I'm not totally converted, but I get past the hesitation now, so I say go for it!
Wear it! You look adorable. But I'm totally with you. I very, VERY rarely wear my fedora in public; I feel like I look so silly. Have a fab weekend, gorgeous!

such a cute top. love lace.
aww, I think the hat looks lovely. Although, I know what you mean I get self conscious for the first bit, but then I usually get over it and I end up feeling thrilled to be wearing my hat. I say go for it, I think you look gorgeous. Happy weekend hun. xx veronika
i 100% have the same hat 'hang up' that you do, but let me tell you, it looks good! so wear it like you mean it 🙂
Your top is really cute. I love it! xoxo
i'm totally there with you on hats. i love how people can pull them off but i just don't fee. like me in them. finally found a fedora at a thrift store that actually works for me though!
I love hats and yours is nice.
Kisses
How do people wear them so naturally? The answer is confidence! If you absolutely love what you're wearing you won't be self conscious about it. Now wear it proudly because it looks amazing on you!
xx Allie
I feel exactly the same way about hats…i don't know what it is…but yours is adorable…maybe mine is too?
Ha, love hats but always feel awk wearing them outside the house. They look cute though!
I think it looks great on you! I had the same thoughts when I bought my first fedora – I think it's just because you're not used to wearing a hat, but once you wear it out a few times you start loving it!

No way, you look absolutely adorable in this hat!!! You must wear it proud, girlfriend. Great look, so pretty. <3
I like the hat!!! Btw, what color lipstick are you wearing??? I want it! That pink is an awesome color….tell me which brand please? I want to go try!
Thanks,
Molly
I always feel a little bit costume-y when I'm wearing a hat! It doesn't come naturally to me! So I definitely get what you mean, but think you DEFINITELY can pull off a hat! It looks super cute!
i too cant bring myself to wear my new hats in public! ugh
i couldn't love you more in that hat, anna!!!! you look adorable. especially in the first pic. you crazy girl! hope pitchfork was fun, i am so jealous!

I feel the same way about sunglasses. I always feel so awkward and cliche'.
The hat really does look great on you though 🙂
I bet once you wear it out you'll fall in love! hats shade your face, cover up bad hair days, and ive found that my panama hat goes with just about everything!
I LOVE that top!!! I have been dying for a lace top!!!
