Imperfect (See Jane Miss the Mark)
Blogging has always been a great way for me to tap into my creative side. I initially started See Jane as an outlet of sorts back in 2010 and for a way to explore my passions. Years later, it’s evolved but still remains a way for me to express some of my favorite past times: fashion and food (fine, and shopping).
The thing about blogs is that they often portray perfection. I totally get it–I don’t want to post a hideous picture of myself on the internet (because the internet IS forever, you know) or an unappealing meal that I cooked. If you didn’t already know, blogs can be a bit of smoke and mirrors; they often only show the pleasant and the poised–and that’s ok! I’m the first to admit that I prefer looking at pretty, inspirational images. Just know that not everything in the blogosphere is as perfect as perceived and that many have become a business where their job is to constantly inspire. A style editor once said to me, “it takes a lot of effort to make a shoot look effortless.” Her words have always resonated with me and as a result, I try not to take myself too seriously. I wanted to give you a glimpse into some things in my life that DIDN’T make the blog. They’re self-explanatory (I expect zero of these images to be pinned), but I’ll explain myself anyway.
Lovely, honest post. I have started my own blog here in New Zealand (http://forty-plus.blogspot.co.nz/) and have just partnered with a local photographer. On Sunday we took 600 photos and only 20 or so were usable! I guess you just have to learn from these experiences and move on!
Funny, anyone with a blog completely understands. I often get blank stares or weird looks with my tripod and photographing food is just darn difficult!
I think you do a great job and adore your blog 🙂

Great quote and love the photos!
Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

Love this post! So real. 🙂 Thanks for being brave enough to go out on a limb and post something like this. It's just great.
I love that even your "imperfect" is inspiring. Thanks for being so honest – makes me love the blog even more AND really is inspiring! xo
As a fellow blogger, I 100% agree with everything you said here…and I have so many "outtakes" from windy days like yours above LOL 🙂

Haha I love this! I need to do blooper posts more often. But these aren't even that bad. 😉
The exact same thing happened when I tried to make gnocchi at home! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing this! It's always refreshing to see bloggers who don't take themselves too seriously!
Love this! I rarely do outfit posts because I never like the ones we take, our dog always tries to get in the shot or we just don't have time!
thank you for this!!! it's a good reminder for all of us 🙂

hah love this and the commentary.
Love seeing a little behind the scenes action. Fun!
I really like sharing my "outtakes" and failures on the blog on a semi-regular basis. I think it makes your readers trust you more and know that you're a real person. But seriously…yours aren't that bad. You're still pretty much perfect 🙂

Amen. And 90% of the photos I make for an outfit post are bloopers as well. Sometimes even 100%. I gave up on trying to be "pin-worthy" a looong time ago. It's just not fun that way, now is it? xo
I also tried to grill pineapple, right next to a burger. I expected it to give the burger some tropical flavor, but no – the pineapple just tasted like burger.
Thank you for being 100% honest. It's refreshing to read. You are one of my favorite bloggers (it helps that you feature your adorable English bulldog frequently), and it's nice to know that life for some bloggers isn't all sunshine and perfection.
I love the skirt in your second photo! It's adorable.
Love this! I just stumbled on your blog a few weeks ago and it has been come part of my morning coffee routine :). As a new reader I love that now I know you are a real person too!

I looooove this post! It's hard sometimes to remember that everything we share on the Internet is often the "highlight reel" – we share the pretty, the inspired, the poised, and sometimes we even share a bit of the tragic and the lowest of lows – but not often do we share the mundane, the small mistakes that happen in the everyday! It's nice to be reminded that they happen all the friggin time! 🙂
beautiful words, jane! nothing is perfect, but blogging is a way to remember all of the good and pretty things in life!

I'm right there with you Anna! More often than not my recipes turn out charred and my outfit pictures look a little awkward… we're all human. 😉

really appreciated this post. obviously, different blogs have different ultimate missions and objectives, some to inspire and exude that polished, envy-inciting lifestyle, others to celebrate the mundane or the imperfect. i think balancing honesty and humanity with the beautifully edited moments is important.
What a funny post. I love seeing the 'outakes' or 'bloopers'. More please! 🙂

I love this!
Thanks for the reminder!

This post is awesome – even though I know that what I see on blogs is the perfect, glossy version of a person's life, it's still hard not to get caught up in that illusion sometimes! This post is a good reminder of what really goes on behind the scenes sometimes 🙂
Love that quote, and love your honesty. Keep being yourself and people with continue to be inspired by you!
Great post! It's true that blogs often only show perfection and I applaud your effort at showing that bloggers are not perfect. I think it's something that we need to remind ourselves off!

LOVE that you posted this! Thanks for reminding us that things aren't always as perfect as they appear online (which can be quite intimidating!

I love your blog, I have been following it for a long time! And this your post is so sincere and nice, and makes fall in love with your blog even more 🙂 Blogs are all about perfect photos, colors, food, but everybody knows that behind the perfect there is always failures, disaster and so on, just not everyone likes to share it. So thank you for sharing 🙂 your gnocchi made me smile :))
haha the windy city! thanks for sharing this post, I like your blog because of your naturality, so different to the other bloggers..
kisses from Spain!
Thank you for the honesty! I once read a quote that said, "Don't compare your behind-the-scenes with everyone else's highlight reel." It always made me think of blogging.
Digging this post, Anna. For every shot that makes my blog, ten are deleted while making a, "Ew, no way!" face. 🙂
And at least you gave those recipes a try- because if I could make decent gnocchi myself, I'd be all over it, too!
Hope you're having a good time in LDN!

I really, really respect this post. It's refreshing.
I adore this post. It's so nice to see a blogger I admire so much admit that mot everything is perfect (and really, it shouldn't be!)
Ashley
Ah! That wind-blown photo totally hits home for me! If I had a nickle for every photo I've had to delete because I looked like I was standing behind a 747, I'd probably have $5!
Seriously though, great post.
Thanks for sharing the imperfect side of your blog! It's refreshing to see – especially the food gone wrong. My attempts to make what I pinned never seem to come out like the picture!
Thank you for this. How completely refreshing and honest! As blog readers I think we certainly get swept up in the perceived perfection of it all…
It's nice to be reminded that all blogs are very edited (and of course, very beautiful) works of art 🙂
Love your sunnies!
