Gratitude: A Short Story (See Jane Tell)

My Monday morning started out with a call from Eric telling me he was headed to the ER. His voice was faint and he sounded like he was pure agony. Rewind to 10 minutes before: we were both at our respective offices when out of the blue, he felt the worst pain he’s ever experienced on the left side of his abdomen. He painstakingly removed himself from work and got a cab to the hospital. After receiving his call, I dropped everything at work and ran to the ER to meet him where I found him slumped over in a wheelchair, attempting to check in with the receptionist. It’s been awhile since I’ve experienced such feelings of both sheer panic and helplessness; it made me sick to my stomach.
Eric is going to be fine; it turns out he has kidney stones and the pain is supposed to be incredible. The ER doctor joked that he was having early sympathy pains because people often liken passing a stone to childbirth (yay). Although a crisis was somewhat averted, being pregnant has exposed me to a whole new vulnerability; anxious doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about all the new changes in my life. At the same time, I’ve never felt more grateful. The stress and anxiety I felt on Monday and have been feeling the past eight months are only making my senses that much clearer. I can’t wait for this next chapter in my life–even if many emotions have been all-consuming. And I feel very lucky.

Aww! Poor Eric. Yes, I have heard kidney stones are agonizing. Thank God he is ok. As for your anxiety and gratitude… I can relate as I often experience a mix of the two.

Oh kidney stones are AWFUL! I had them after my daughter was born and they definitely rival childbirth in the pain department. So glad to hear that he is okay 🙂

Girl, don't feel too anxious. You are way stronger than you even realize. I felt terrified before having my daughter, but then instincts took over. Once your son arrives, something will happen inside you. You won't be tired, stressed, or anxious anymore-so don't worry! As far as the pain goes, get the epidural early, and you won't feel a thing. It's not as bad as people say, promise!

Not to make light of a serious situation, but this is straight out of a sitcom! Joey had kidney stones when Rachel went into labor with Emma on Friends, and Jesse had an appendicitis on Full House when Rebecca went into labor with the twins! Just know that with a little sappy music and a 2 – 3 minute heart to heart chat, everything will be okay. 🙂 Wishing you all the best!!

my boyfriend has chronic kidney stones, his first battle with them at the tender age of 17. i've only been around to experience the most recent hit (thankfully, about two years ago), but i can definitely sympathize with the fear, anxiety, hopelessness that hits in a deluge when someone you love is literally overtaken with pain.
while they are certainly super painful and beyond unpleasant, the good news is, there are some known ways to deal with them and help them pass. depending on what type of stone your husband had (calcium based or uric acid based), he can make some diet adjustments to help try to prevent them in the future.
