I'm all over the black bag. I have a black Marc by Marc Jacobs tote that I got a couple years ago and I use it all the time. It's my go to for anything!

Of these, my choice would be the Celine Trapeze bag. It's so sleek and modern and definitely holds its own in a transition from day to night!

Black bags are the worst to shop for! So many choices & you're right, you want it to be perfect because you'll be using it so often. I ended up getting one at Kate Spade that was perfect for me but it took two years.

I'm partial to the Philip Lim one, based on staring at it on other blogs.

I've been on an ongoing bag hunt as well and I have a couple suggestions. First, really try on these purses in a store, and bring your laptop along. You're spending a mint here, and you want to make sure your purse is functional and comfortable.

I'd check out Margiela for great work to weekend transition bags.
The quality is superb, and the styling really modern. I have their painted linen tote from last year that's held up so well.

Their selection right now isn't that expansive at Barneys.com so you may want to try eBay. The downfall of designer bags is usually durability. It's why I'm cautious to pull the trigger on the trapeze bag. Has anyone been pleased with how it's holding up?

I had a gorgeous Lanvin duffel I used for about 8 months, but while the leather was buttery and beautiful, the straps just couldn't support much of my stuff while commuting. Good luck and looking forward to seeing what you decide on!

i like the Rochas and Philip Lim out of these. Philip Lim in particular because of the quirky details but practical shape/messenger style.

reminds me of the Celine Triptyque with the zippers..kinda. it's big enough for my laptop and looks chic. hopefully i'll like it in person!

I think you should definitely try to see these bags in person if possible and test them out with your things. It might get a bit heavy depending on what you intend to carry in it. I made this mistake recently with my own hunt for a black bag. I ordered the Philip Lim Pashli tote unseen. When I received it and I put everything inside the tote, it felt like a ton of bricks! I really love the Celine, but I saw a picture of an overstuffed an somewhere and the bag looked so warped! Good luck!

I just purchased the Mulberry Bayswater in black! It's great for carrying a laptop around and it works with everything for evening outfits! I love it!

The Celine is a classic, but I love this Marc by Marc Jacobs one!

I have #3. It is adorable and I get a lot of compliments on it…but if I could do it over I would not buy it. The clasp is awful and getting the thing open and closed is not only difficult but super awkward. Pick function over form – get #1!
