Real Outfit Recap + House Update
I’ve got new home on the brain. As you know from last week, we closed (yay) but we aren’t moving until April. Why? I’m skim-coating the walls (it’s currently bumpy plaster), repainting the whole house (Benjamin Moore ‘White Dove’), painting the moldings/trim (Benjamin Moore ‘White Dove’ in semi-gloss) and re-staining the hardwood floors (the ‘Provincial’ color – a true, medium brown).
This is all fine and dandy but what happens when I make a bad choice? Home decisions seem so permanent…and I’m scared I’ll have to live with a less than ideal choice. Any advice?

I’m sure you have picked the right things! The idea of being permanent sounds scary, but it is possible to change. Maybe more work will go into it, but you can always change. But I’m so excited to see how it will all turn out!

Stick to the colours that you love and feel the most confident with. We renovated our 1915 villa last year after living in it for one year. It was basically to reverse the very tacky renovation the previous owners had done to get it ready for sale. Although we live in Auckland, New Zealand where most new decor is light, bright and Scandi (pale wood and white or grey), we mixed Scandi themes with modern American (dark wood) and we love the result. Staining our oak floors a very dark brown went against the ‘norm’ but we knew it was what we wanted. I also recommend using an Interior Designer for anything that feels out of your depth. We literally bought small chunks of time with our ID, who dropped in and out of our lives as we needed a steer on something important (floor stain colour, shaker or non-shaker style cupboards). It was worth the small investment.
