Green Breakfast Smoothie (See Jane Blend)

I know, I know–I’m about a century behind on the smoothie craze.  My mom, however, is one of the original pioneers of the smoothie movement.  She’s been forcing them down my throat for as long as I can remember.  Every single time I’m home, she makes me a healthy smoothie for breakfast (and yes, they’re actually processed foods allowed!).  I’ve never been big into breakfast on weekdays, either; I’d much rather sleep.  However, sipping one down in the morning has really quelled the “hungriness” (hungry/angry) I feel by noon due to skipping breakfast.

handful of spinach
handful of kale (broken up, with stems)
handful of strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 banana
2 spoonfuls of raw almond butter
2 spoonfuls of greek yogurt
spoonful of chia seeds
1/4 (eyeballed) of filtered water

Disclaimer:  I’m not really into sweets so this isn’t sugary at all–it’s more nutty than anything.  I’m also not a health expert; I just know I need to eat healthier and this is a great way for me to incorporate more nutrition in my life.  Here’s my ingredient list.  I’m curious, if you make smoothies, what do you use?


  1. I posted my favorite smoothie recipe a couple weeks ago. It's basically just kale, spinach, greek yogurt, strawberries, blueberries and mango. With a splash of unfiltered apple juice. Probably much too sweet for your taste!

  2. I use similar things in my smoothies. No almond butter, but I always use spinach and berries!

    I got a juicer last night and I put in a tomato, apples, banana (not smart), spinach, kale, parsley, cilantro, pineapple, and chia seeds and it was really really good!

  3. I've never thought of smoothies as breakfast material. I too would rather sleep, so I always skipped breakfast. But maybe smooth will give me some hope. Thanks for the post.

    I don't know if I'd put vegetables in my smoothies though. I've only had fruity smoothies.

  4. My go to smoothie tastes like dessert:
    1 frozen banana
    1 tbsp almond butter
    large handful of spinach
    1/2 c almond milk

    I'll make it the night before and stick it in the fridge so I can just grab it and go in the morning!

  5. Lots of smoothies at our place, too! I like mine with a couple handfulls of spinach, a big splash of OJ, and a bunch of frozen fruit (that way I don't need to add ice). I like the idea of adding almond butter/yogurt. My boyfriend always adds 3 raw eggs to his… blegh 😉

  6. i usually do various fruits (blueberries, strawberries, mangoes, peaches, pineapple, banana) with some greek yogurt and a tad bit of almond milk. frozen spinach or an avocado, occasionally thrown in, if i have them on hand. i've been meaning to indulge in the chia seeds; i drink them with cherry juice at my sister's house and they are such a on-steroids-super food!

  7. Using frozen bananas makes a huge difference in texture! Just peel ripe bananas, stick them in a ziploc and pop them in the freezer until you need them. The smoothie becomes much creamier and more like a milkshake 🙂
    I also like putting in rolled oats and a tiny bit of agave nectar for sweetness.

    I've been really into the green smoothies too these days. I add everything you add, (but not the yogurt – which I would love to try, and not the almond butter), plus frozen mangoes (gives it a sweet kick), a few ice cubes, berries (if I have them in my fridge), a spoonful of flaxseed and a spoonful of goji berries. The last two are recent whole food finds and are supposedly really good for you. I'd also like to try frozen peaches when they're in season.


  9. i have been addicted to my morning smoothie for almost a decade! I like pineapple or coconut juice in mine so that makes it sweet which I love, but one great tip is not only the amazing frozen banana ( half frozen half fresh ) but I mix hemp/chia and flax in a container; put in in freezer so it lasts ages and then put a big swig of it in my smoothie – so much goodness!! My only smoothie downside is that I live in the land of ice and snow and I have to bundle up as I turn so cold after drinking it each morning!

  10. My sisters and I call that hungry/angry feeling being "hangry". It happens to me if I skip breakfast, so I'll keep this smoothie recipe handy next time I do!

  12. Eyeball 1/4 cup water
    Big handful of frozen spinach
    Little handful of frozen blueberries
    Spoonful of dry peanut butter or dry chocolate peanut butter (PB2 – so good if you haven't tried, all natural, wayy less fat than regular PB, etc.) or small handful of raw almonds or spoonful of almond butter
    Lots of cinnamon
    Sometimes I add Greek yogurt and/or almond milk.

    That's it! This is often both my breakfast and lunch and keeps me full. It keeps my skin and eyes clear. It's also DEE-LICIOUS and even passes the kid test. My 2 year old loves it.

    In general with smoothies, I don't add much fruit – too much sugar. If I use kale in a smoothy, I always add a little lemon. Helps a lot.

  15. @NP + @marina – I don't have a Vitamix, just an normal Black and Decker blender BUT my friend swears by her Magic Bullet…so much that I might get one just for smoothies as they have mug attachments that are dishwasher safe! (they're $30-40, depending where you find it).

  16. love this! i like to make my monsters with spinach, apples, pears, grated ginger, almond milk, ice, and freshly squeezed lime and lemon. it's definitely more tart and gingery than sweet.

  17. I'm not usually a huge smoothie drinker but I recently got some kale in a farm share I subscribe to. So since I have no clue how to cook it, might as well drink it. I've been throwing it in the blender with some 2% Fage, banana and some almond milk. Helps keep the hangriness away until noon.
